Basset Hound: The Dog Most Likely to Look Sad at a Birthday Party

Basset Hound owner guide — ear infections, obesity, spinal health, eye conditions, and how to keep this low-slung scenthound healthy and comfortable.

Basset Hounds look profoundly melancholic but are not, in fact, sad. They are curious, gentle, food-motivated, and remarkably stubborn when their nose has found something compelling. The drooping expression is structural — a result of the loose, heavy skin that was selected for centuries because it helps funnel scent particles toward the nose. Understanding this helps you understand almost everything else about the breed.

Ear Management: A Daily Commitment

Basset Hound ears are famously long — long enough to drag through whatever the dog is sniffing, including their water bowl. These ear flaps cover the ear canal and create exactly the warm, humid, poorly-ventilated environment that bacteria and yeast love. Check ears daily. Clean with a veterinary ear cleaner weekly. After any water contact, dry thoroughly. Signs of infection: smell, head shaking, scratching at ears, dark discharge. Treat promptly — chronic ear infections in this breed lead to permanent damage.

Weight and the Spinal Question

Bassets have long spines, short legs, and a body structure that already loads the intervertebral discs heavily. An overweight Basset is a Basset in chronic pain. Measure food precisely. No table scraps. Treat sizes should be very small — Bassets will work enthusiastically for tiny rewards. The combination of short legs, long spine, and heavy body also means high-impact activities (jumping from furniture, stairs repeatedly) increase disc disease risk. Teach them to use ramps if they like to get on the sofa.

Common Health Conditions

  • Chronic ear infections: As above — the number one manageable health issue in this breed.
  • Intervertebral disc disease (IVDD): The long, low spine is susceptible to disc problems. Signs: reluctance to move, pain on spinal palpation, sudden hindlimb weakness. Veterinary emergency if acute paralysis.
  • Eye conditions: Ectropion (drooping lower eyelid) exposes conjunctiva to chronic irritation. Entropion also occurs. Annual eye checks.
  • Obesity: High food motivation plus low exercise requirements plus scent-focused lifestyle = significant obesity risk. Weigh food, not eyeball it.
  • Glaucoma: Elevated eye pressure — painful and vision-threatening. Annual eye pressure measurement is worthwhile in this breed.

Basset Hound Care Summary

  • Clean ears daily (wipe) and weekly (cleaner) — prevention is far easier than treatment.
  • Keep weight lean — spine health depends on it.
  • Ramps for furniture access — reduce spinal disc stress.
  • Annual eye checks including pressure measurement.
  • Know IVDD signs — sudden hindlimb weakness is an emergency.
