Siberian Husky Ownership: A Comprehensive Guide to Your New Drama Queen

Siberian Husky owner guide — escape artistry, the talking back, hip dysplasia, eye conditions, and why your Husky will loudly narrate their displeasure at everything.

Siberian Huskies are extraordinarily beautiful, physically impressive, and absolutely unhinged. They will escape from things that should be escape-proof. They will hold entire vocal conversations with you about the injustice of dinner being late. They will run 100 miles if given the opportunity. They will remodel your garden. And then they will curl up next to you and be so breathtakingly gorgeous that you'll forgive everything immediately, which they know, which is why they keep doing it.

3 Things Nobody Tells You About Siberian Huskies

  • They are master escape artists. Huskies were bred to run long distances across open terrain. Fencing that would contain other dogs is treated as a challenge by a Husky. They dig under, climb over, squeeze through, and occasionally figure out how to unlatch gates. Six-foot solid fencing with a dig barrier is the baseline, not the ceiling.
  • They talk back. The Husky "woo woo" is not a bark — it's communication. Huskies will vocally express displeasure, boredom, excitement, and disagreement with your decisions. This is charming and extremely loud. Neighbours will have feelings about it.
  • They do not make good guard dogs. Huskies are typically friendly with strangers, excited to meet new people, and largely unbothered by unfamiliar visitors. They will not protect property. They will, however, greet burglars with enthusiasm and possibly help them carry things out.

Health Things to Actually Watch For

  • Hip dysplasia: Common in the breed. Maintain healthy weight and have hips scored if breeding.
  • Eye conditions: Cataracts (juvenile and adult onset), progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), and corneal dystrophy all occur in Huskies. Annual eye exams from age 1. The SHCA (Siberian Husky Club of America) recommends yearly CAER eye exams for breeding dogs.
  • Zinc-responsive dermatosis: Huskies can develop skin scaling, crusting, and hair loss around the muzzle and eyes if they don't absorb zinc properly. Dietary zinc supplementation resolves it in most cases.
  • Hypothyroidism: Low thyroid function causes weight gain, lethargy, and coat changes. Manageable with daily medication.

Your Husky Care Cheat Sheet

  • 2+ hours vigorous exercise daily — running, hiking, sledding, bikejoring. Not optional.
  • Never off-lead in an unfenced area. Recall is unreliable when they decide to run.
  • Escape-proof garden: solid fence, buried wire base, checked regularly for new excavations.
  • Brush heavily during twice-yearly coat blows; weekly brush at other times.
  • Never shave a Husky's double coat — it regulates body temperature in both heat and cold.
