Australian Shepherds originated in the American Southwest despite their misleading name, likely descended from European shepherd dogs that came west during gold rush and cattle ranching eras. These medium-sized herding dogs were perfected for managing livestock in open country. Their beautiful varied coats and athleticism made them popular ranch hands.
Temperament
Aussies are intelligent, active, and eager herding dogs with strong instincts to control motion through herding behaviour. They're affectionate and loyal but require experienced owners who can provide structure, training, and ample activity.
