Bulldogs originated in 13th-century England, originally bred for the barbaric sport of bullbaiting. After the sport was outlawed in 1835, dedicated breeders transformed them from ferocious fighters into gentle companions. Modern Bulldogs retain their muscular build but are known for their docile, dignified temperament.
