Whippet
About the Whippet
Whippets were developed in England during the Victorian era by crossing Greyhounds with Terriers to create smaller sighthounds. These elegant, athletic dogs were used for racing and rabbit coursing by working-class dog enthusiasts. They combine speed and athleticism with surprising gentleness.
Temperament
Whippets are gentle, affectionate, and affable dogs despite their athletic build and keen hunting heritage. They're sensitive, responsive, and thrive on human companionship, though they possess strong prey drive toward small animals.
Care Guide
Daily exercise (45-60 minutes) including free running satisfies their prey drive and energy. Their short coat requires minimal grooming. They're sensitive to cold and should wear coats in cool weather. They have strong prey drive; secure fencing and caution around small animals is essential.
Did you know?
Whippets were called "the poor man's Greyhound" because they provided working-class Victorians with affordable racing and coursing pursuits.

Common Whippet owner questions
Short answers for the questions new owners search most often
How much should a Whippet weigh?
Whippet weight depends on sex, frame and body condition. The age table is a planning estimate derived from adult breed weights, so confirm with your vet if your dog is gaining or losing quickly.
How often should I groom a Whippet?
Whippet grooming is usually low. Brush more often during shedding, after muddy walks, or if you notice mats forming.
What should new Whippet puppy owners do first?
Book a first vet visit, confirm vaccine history, keep food consistent for the first few days, and start a calm toilet, sleep and handling routine.
