Samoyeds are the product of thousands of years working alongside the Samoyedic peoples of Siberia — herding reindeer, hauling sleds, and sleeping on top of their people to provide mutual warmth. The result is a medium-large dog of extraordinary social nature, a double coat that could fill a duvet, and a permanent upward curve to their lips that has become known as the "Samoyed smile." The smile is not marketing. It is structural.
The Coat: Prepare Accordingly
The Samoyed has a thick, white or cream double coat that sheds continuously and dramatically twice a year. During seasonal "coat blows," the volume of shed fur is genuinely remarkable — vacuum daily, brush daily, own appropriate clothing. Between blows, brushing 3× weekly maintains the coat, prevents matting behind the ears and at the collar line, and significantly reduces the ambient fur situation. This coat also keeps them warm in cold weather and, counterintuitively, provides some insulation in heat — but they are not heat-tolerant dogs. Walk them in cool conditions.
Common Health Conditions
- Samoyed hereditary glomerulopathy: A genetic kidney disease causing progressive kidney failure, primarily affecting males (sex-linked). Responsible breeders genetic test. Ask to see records. There is currently no cure; early detection allows management.
- Hip dysplasia: OFA/BVA scores from both parents. Common at this size.
- Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA): Genetic testing available. Always buy from tested parents.
- Diabetes mellitus: Samoyeds have above-average incidence. Signs: increased thirst, urination, weight loss. Manageable with insulin and dietary management once diagnosed.
- Aortic stenosis: Cardiac condition found at elevated rates. Annual cardiac auscultation from age 2 is worthwhile.
They Need Company and Activity
Samoyeds are social dogs — bred to work in groups and live in close physical proximity to humans. Isolation produces vocal, anxious, destructive dogs. They need 60-90 minutes of exercise daily plus human company throughout the day. They do well in active households, are good with children, and get along with other dogs. They are not suited to long solitary days.
Samoyed Care Summary
- Brush 3× weekly; daily during coat blows — a non-negotiable time commitment.
- Buy from parents tested for hereditary glomerulopathy and PRA.
- No exercise in heat — this is a cold-climate breed.
- Annual cardiac check from age 2.
- Plan for company and stimulation; this breed does not tolerate isolation well.
